More Popular Detroit Area Bars

Our second post during the first week of December includes more popular Detroit area bars.  The bars on this list fit the category of hipster, dive bars.  In our fathers’ era he would have called them shot-and-a-beer bars.

Nancy Whiskey – 2644 Harrison Street, Detroit

This North   Corktown dive bar is part of the Pantheon of Detroit drinking establishments.  It’s seen a resurgence as nearby Corktown has roared back and still has a loyal following from when the Tigers played at the corner of Trumbull and Michigan.

Their friendly service and phoenix-like story of rising from the ashes after a fire a few years ago give it amazing character.  The establishment began in 1902 butting on the top of our list for longevity.

My Dad’s Bar – 14922 Kercheval, Detroit

On the city’s limits its mere feet from the suburban border, the true last stop in Detroit before you hit Grosse Pointe.

The place has a level of retro kitsch including a leg lamp that’s comfortable.  Outside it has the unmistakable “Smile your Dad’s from Detroit” mural.  Simply warm, like an old living room with a fire in the hearth.

I love this bar.  Don’t expect to do cocktails here, but they have a good selection of beers and a solid patio. The decor is like your friend’s cool dad’s basement lounge that’s trapped in the 70s.   Appropriately dimly lit and has a good jukebox, and plenty of space for groups.
