Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton

This is the starting point of our blog covering authentic dive bars in Metro Detroit. The popularity of authentic dive bars in Detroit is a resurgence of interest in things reminding us of a bygone era. What is this era? It’s the era having to do with what made Detroit great. Our greatness as an automotive headquarters put us on the global map. The mass production era began with Henry Ford in 1915. At that time he created the world’s largest mass production assembly plant.
Detroit Metro Airport is the hub for residents and travelers flowing through the greater Detroit area. Surrounding this hub are the western Detroit suburbs. Since the 1920’s, neighborhood bars were constructed to primarily serve the automotive workers. Today, both urban and suburban, upscale, visitors appear to be attracted to these surviving establishments. These ‘shot-and-a-beer’ bars harken to the era of their parents and grandparents.
What do they contain? These bar & grilles host authentic, old-fashioned service and menus. They are generally devoid of contemporary appetizers and what may be called ‘fancy drinks.’ However, do no interpret their straightforward food and drink menus as a weakness or a shortcoming. This direct serving approach of basics is akin to the lore of the first half of the twentieth century. Are we not attracted to the concept of meatloaf, apple pie, mashed potatoes and gravy? This spartan-like description is both literal of the menus, and figuratively descriptive of the mindset of neighborhood bars.
